Chesapeake Light Craft (Double)

As I stated…. I thought I was done with the kayak whispering, where I could just get back to my paddling… My Rebel Ilaga (Friend in Greenlandic) was beginning to miss me. Then I got a text from Ted, of Native Water Sports, he had a client who had a Chesapeake Light Craft looking for a new home. I had no idea what this was, but said, “Sure, have her get in touch with me.” When she told me her story of how her father had made this, along with several other boats, and all she wanted was for this boat to have a good home… well… I couldn’t say no, but I had no idea what I was adopting.  What I saw upon arrival floored me. What I was about to undertake seemed like I had been practicing up to this point. CLC Boats has been making boat building plans for decades and has surpassed 40,000+ plans sold. This boat is 21′ 7″ long… a yacht among yaks.

UPDATE: (3/23/2021)

And so it began. I started with the sanding of the deck. There are some areas that are damaged and I have been thinking of faux painting some wood inlays to conceal that damage, but then I did not want to alter the flaws–– instead, leave them to show all of its journey; like leaving a piece of antique furniture untouched to preserve its authenticity. I think this will be beautiful.

The new seats have arrived from Ed’s Canoe. All I need to do is cut the arms of the cane seat bottom to length as well as lower the back rest to fit under the cockpit rims. I will use the spare pieces to serve as seat locks to keep the seat from moving around when in use as well as allow for easy removal after a paddle.

Seats have been cut down and fitted, rudder system re-wired and cabled. All the original bungee, roping have been preserved.

My friend is as athlete and tends to go all out–– LOL. We will never win a synchronized paddling competition.

  1. Dave, I’m so glad you found CLC’s website. This is a wealth of knowledge!!! My dad was very active on their forum during his builds. I’m sure you can find posts of his relating to the double. His name is Jack Jacoby if you ever want to search for posts. 😊
