Ghosts In The Mangroves

My niece and great niece were visiting for a couple of days, so I borrowed my neighbor’s kayaks and took them into the mangroves of Hobe Sound, FL. It was their first experience navigating the tunnels. This is one of my favorite places to paddle, whether kayaking or SUP, especially when I want to disappear and immerse myself in an alien world. It is so quiet back there, gliding on a mirrored surface and where the only sounds are from unseen beings, ever-present and aware of me in their world. But it’s when the breeze picks up and its fingers moil through the leaves as though whispering to me—and maybe they are, the ghosts of the mangroves.
