Return to Peanut Island

Peanut Island, in Riviera Beach, FL, is rich in history and offers both land and sea trekking. There was/is a hidden bunker for JFK for when he and his family would vacation in their Palm Beach home.

If you can’t make the paddle, there are a couple of alternatives: Blue Water Cove Resort and the Peanut Island Shuttle Boat. Round trip fares seem to be between $17-$19/adult with reduced fares for children, but check their pricing and schedules). If you are lucky enough to catch a local, it might only cost you a six-pack, but good luck getting back.

If you plan the short paddle, heed to the winds and tides before you set out. Both can work against you making this short trip to Peanut Island a bear. The currents and winds on the inside can get so strong that a poorly planned outing to the island can only be paddled by the accomplished and fit paddler.

For launching, I prefer Jim Barry Light Harbor Park for easy launch access, restrooms and free parking. But make sure you park on the south side near the park entrance because the parking slots near the ramp are reserved for boat trailers. I suggest dropping off your SUP/yak at the pier, then park and walk back.

Don’t forget your mask, fins and a camera. This is an aquarium of the finest (Images by Wendy C.).
