Perception (Aquaterra) Sea Lion

I bought this boat along with a Perception Spectrum–– both were in pretty sad shape, but I knew the Sea Lion to be a great boat on the water and although the color had dulled from being outside under the sun for too many years, the integrity of the hull looked in tack. Usually, the things that go on this is the plastic rudder block, which gets brittle and breaks down; fortunately, this one looked to be in great shape.

With several passes of the buffer using a coarse compound, the surface color evened out. I had to use Coverall to bring back some of the luster, but it raines dull. Even under the hatches, the color remains salmon and not the original red. This boat had too much time under the Florida sun.

But with new deck roping and spending time removing the decals on the boaw, it came out nicer than I thought.

The Aquaterra Sea Lion (Now Perception) is a sought after, great, all round kayak. Fast on the water, very stable, sporting a swept up bow to keep the nose above the waves. The thigh braces add an extra level of stability and serve well for advanced paddling techniques. Cross winds and wave action are not a problem–– drop the rudder and stay on course. This is an excellent day trip or touring adventure kayak with plenty of cargo space under two large capacity, bulkheaded (Front & Rear) watertight hatches. The seat contains a cup holder and the seat back is adjustable and comes with a detachable padded seat-back cover.

Tucked under the cockpit bow is a small day bag, ideal for storing a camera, phone and other small items, within easy reach.

This kayak has had all the deck roping replaced with added tube hand holds, the rudder assembly and foot slides have The seat-back roping and bungee have been replaced to provide an easy adjustment setting to raise or recline the seat back. The adjustable foot pegs can handle any paddler (shortest recommended inseam for foot-pegs is 30”) The rear hatch cover has a double strap for additional on-deck gear storage for multi-day trips. Equipped with front and rear carry handles .

Scratching is evident but will not compromise the integrity of the hull. The color has dulled over the years, but the quality of the boat remains intact.

The poly construction is ideal for rocky entrances/exists. The reflective side stripping has minor tears in some places.
This is an excellent kayak for beginners through advanced paddlers.
