Constantly scouring the local For Sale sites (FB Marketplace, Craigslist, Nextdoor, Offer Up, Letgo, etc.) I came across a two for one deal I could not pass up. I contacted the seller who said someone was already committed to coming by at 6:00 PM, so I looked at my watch (5:25 PM) offered him more than his ask and said I would be there in 20 minutes (10 minutes before the other person). When I arrived, I was stunned. Here was a nice, plastic ocean faring kayak Aquaterra Sea Lion) as well as a behemoth of a tandem in fiberglass (unknown origin). Both were in dire need of restoration, but at the price I could not afford to pass these up.

I had a hard time reading the worn away decal on the bow deck of the tandem, but found a better manufactured mark on the rudder blade. It was a Point 65 North. Seaching the internet, this turns out to be Swedish made. I went onto their website, uploaded the images and they identified it as a K2R model.
My main concern was replacing the shattered rudder pin block from this vintage model. Point 65 N no longer stocked or manufactured this part. Chances of finding a replacement was going to be slim to none and and it was beyond repair. But having a neighbor with every tool know to mankind, I decided I would fabricate one on my own using a block of Teflon and a router. All said and done it matched the original, perfectly.
The POINT K2R is a Swedish boat, great, all round kayak. Fast on the water, very stable, and with the amount of cargo space onboard you can go long distances. Cross winds and wave action are not a problem–– drop the rudder and stay on course. This is an excellent day trip or touring adventure kayak with plenty of cargo space under two large capacity, bulkheaded (Front & Rear) watertight hatches.
This kayak has had all the deck roping replaced with added tube hand holds, A new rudder assembly cam block has been fabricated and the rudder guidewires and guide tubes have been replaced and optimized, including stainless steel shackles and thimbles for easy detachment. The sea-back frame and cushions are new as are the roping and bungee have been replaced. The adjustable foot pegs can handle any paddler. Rudder is controlled from the rear seating position. Equipped with new front and rear carry handles. Minimal scratching.
This is an excellent kayak for beginners through advanced–– one I seriously considered keeping for myself after this restoration. It is a beauty.
